Bitcoin network node count sets new all-time high

Bitcoin is the largest decentralized cryptocurrency network in the world by a large margin, but just how many bitcoin nodes are there today? It turns out, globally there are over 10,000 nodes, which is a new all-time high.

The new node count on the Bitcoin network just set its new all-time high. The number of Bitcoin nodes has grown by a significant amount over the past few days, which confirms the network’s extraordinary growth. At the time of writing, there are over 11,330 known nodes, which is a 15% growth from last time.

The number of available Bitcoin nodes has passed the 13,000 mark for the first time. As Cointelegraph previously reported, the previous all-time high was 11,613, set in January.

According to the statistics dashboard of Bitnodes.io, this milestone was already reached on the 5th. of July, when the number of available nodes reached 13,374. According to Bitnodes, there are about 12,835 nodes in the network at the time of writing,

Coin.Dance, another crypto-currency tracking site, also notes that the number of Bitcoin (BTC) nodes has reached a new all-time high of 12,825. Nodes running Bitcoin Core account for 98.77% of that number, while the rest are spread across less popular implementations like Bitcore and Bitcoin Knots.

Bitcoin network node count sets new all-time high

Bitcoin Core 0.21.1 was released last May with the Taproot activation code and is currently (according to Coin.Dance) the most used version of the software among organizations with available nodes, with nearly 5,000 nodes. According to Bitnodes, there are 5,125 of them, or 40% of the total number of nodes in the network.

Bitnode’s data also shows that almost half of all nodes in the network are running under Tor. Last January, only a quarter of all available nodes were active on the Tor hidden network. Running a client like Bitcoin Core with Tor provides an additional layer of privacy by hiding the IP addresses of connecting hosts.

According to Bitnodes, the number of nodes on the network has increased by 2,739 nodes in the past year, reinforcing bitcoin’s decentralization ethos.

The growth of network nodes is also similar to the expansion currently taking place in the Lightning Network ecosystem, where capacity has increased by more than 70% in less than six months.

In early July, Lightning Network’s public capacity exceeded 1,800 BTC after 100 BTC were added in less than a week. Data from the Lightning Network’s statistical tracker, Bitcoin Visuals, shows that the number of LN nodes exceeds 12,800, which is also a record.
